Ethiopia prepares for a drier-than-normal rainy season
Climate experts are warning that much of northern and central Ethiopia is likely to experience below-normal rainfall during the June–September Kiremt season, while temperatures are expected to remain above average. According to the regional climate outlook, the highest probability of reduced rainfall is forecast for central, northeastern, and northwestern Ethiopia, increasing concerns for agriculture, water resources, and food security.
Ethiopia strengthens preparations for COP32
Ethiopia continues preparations to host the 32nd United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP32) in 2027. The country’s selection by the African Group of Negotiators is being viewed as a major diplomatic achievement, positioning Ethiopia as a key player in continental climate policy and green development. Government institutions are also engaging international partners, including Brazil, to benefit from previous COP hosting experience.
Climate threats to food security remain a major concern
Although Ethiopia was not included in the 2026 Global Report on Food Crises because of insufficient updated food security data, humanitarian agencies warn that millions of Ethiopians remain vulnerable to climate-related food insecurity. Recurrent droughts, erratic rainfall, and conflict continue to threaten agricultural production and livelihoods across several regions.
UNESCO launches climate-resilient beekeeping initiative
UNESCO has launched the BRIDGE-Africa initiative in Ethiopia to help more than two million beekeeping households adapt to climate change. The program focuses on improving climate resilience, protecting biodiversity, and strengthening sustainable livelihoods in Africa’s largest beekeeping industry.
Green Legacy campaign continues
Ethiopia’s Green Legacy Initiative is continuing its nationwide tree-planting campaign, with an ambitious target of 8 billion seedlings in 2026. The initiative aims to restore degraded landscapes, combat climate change, improve watershed management, and increase forest cover across the country.
Climate and international cooperation
Climate cooperation remains high on Ethiopia’s diplomatic agenda. During Canada’s National Day celebration in Addis Ababa, both countries reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening collaboration on climate action, sustainable development, trade, and peacebuilding.
